USED BOOK BUYING GUIDE

Buy second-hand books with confidence.

Used books can offer excellent value, but condition labels are broad. Know what to check before choosing the lowest-priced copy.

What used-book condition labels usually mean

Like new or fine

The copy should have little visible wear, although it may not be factory sealed. Dust jackets and extras should be checked separately.

Very good

Light signs of reading are normal: minor edge wear, a small crease or an inscription. The book should remain clean and structurally sound.

Good

A complete, readable copy with noticeable wear. Highlighting, notes, stickers or previous-owner marks may be permitted by the seller's policy.

Acceptable

Heavy wear is possible. The book should still be readable, but cosmetic damage, extensive annotations or a missing dust jacket may be present.

Read the seller's definition, not just the label

Condition vocabulary is not perfectly standardised across marketplaces. A specialist bookseller may grade conservatively, while an individual seller may use "good" more casually. Open the listing and read the full description.

Look for photographs of the actual copy, details about writing or highlighting, water damage, odours, loose pages, library markings and whether supplementary materials are included.

Confirm the edition and language

Used listings frequently rely on shared catalogue data. The title and stock image can be correct while the seller's copy has another cover or printing. If the exact edition matters, compare the ISBN in the listing with the edition you selected.

Language mistakes are particularly common when a book has international editions. Include the required language in marketplace searches and verify it again before checkout.

Include postage and returns

A very cheap used book can become poor value after delivery. Compare the total cost, especially when ordering single low-priced books from multiple sellers.

Review the returns policy and seller feedback. Clear returns are valuable when a marketplace listing is brief or uses a stock photograph.

When buying new may be wiser

  • The book is a gift and cosmetic condition matters.
  • A textbook requires an unused online access code.
  • The used listing does not confirm the edition or language.
  • The price difference disappears after delivery.
  • The book contains fold-outs, maps, workbooks or other easily missing extras.
